past lives - a reaction
reflections on a lovely movie
one of the most prominent aspects of this movie i appreciated was the scripts men played. emotionally mature, patient, raw and honest. instead of giving in to jealousy, understanding was chosen. i've seem some critic the lack of tension or conflict and i believe we have gotten to used to that narrative. sometimes things, as they are, are just complicated and not necessarily conflicting. i really liked the fact that they chose realness - like the fact that it took 20 years to see each someone you once knew, life got in the way - over grand romantic scripts. i don't think you need a great conflict to showcase depth within a person. someone's day to day lego brick choices reflect who they are almost always more so than one major conflict scene in their life.
i think you are your choices. while your past explains you, who you are today is a culmination of choices within your circumstances. this story was not about love, but about who we once were and who we have become.
this story to me represented the people we are in our past converging with the person we have strived, choice by choice, to become. maybe less of a romance, more of an introspective evolution.
